Which Finger Is the Engagement Ring and Wedding Ring Worn On?

Which Finger Is the Engagement Ring and Wedding Ring Worn On? The choice of which finger to wear a ring on is not random. Traditions vary from country to country and are rooted in history, symbolism, and culture.

In Denmark and Northern Europe In Denmark
The most common tradition is to wear the engagement ring on the left ring finger and the wedding ring on the right ring finger. Many women move their engagement ring from the left hand to the right hand after the wedding, allowing both rings to be worn together. Others prefer to keep the engagement ring on the left hand and wear only the wedding ring on the right ring finger. For men, the wedding ring is traditionally worn on the right ring finger. Engagement rings for men are less common, but when worn, they are usually placed on the left ring finger.

Around the World In many countries
Particularly the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy, the tradition is different. Both the engagement ring and wedding ring are typically worn on the left ring finger, often stacked together. The wedding ring is traditionally worn closest to the heart, with the engagement ring placed above it.

The Symbolism of the Ring Finger
The ring finger has held special significance throughout history. In ancient times, it was believed that a vein ran directly from the left ring finger to the heart, known as the vena amoris, or “vein of love.” While this belief is not anatomically correct, it remains one of the reasons why engagement and wedding rings are still associated with this finger today.

Which Option Should You Choose?
Ultimately, there is no right or wrong choice. Tradition can serve as a beautiful guide, but many people today choose what feels most comfortable and meaningful to them. Some prefer to wear both rings together, while others choose to keep their engagement ring and wedding ring on separate hands.
